Jacques Cartier made three transatlantic crossings between 1534 and 1542, claiming land in North America for the French King Francis I. On his travels he heard two native guides who had been captured by his expedition mentioning “Kanata”, which is the Iroquois word for “village.” This was adapted into the word Canada and was appearing on maps of the region by the 1550s.
